cover_mac1031_100.jpg Sean Jones - "Roots"
$14.98
MAC 1031
Roots renews Jones’ love for the sound that initially hooked him as a youngster: gospel music. “I grew up in church and was a singer,” Jones remembers. “I was in the choir and really didn’t know what I wanted to play other than I didn’t want it to be a saxophone because it seemed that’s what everyone else was playing. The drums were attractive, but my mother said she wasn’t having any of that. Then a teacher gave me two Miles Davis albums, Tutu and Kind of Blue. That was it for me, right there in the fifth grade. Believe it or not, I never really gravitated toward pop music. It was jazz, as well as gospel and maybe an occasional oldie. But it was something about the horn that hooked me immediately.”

cover_tg_fg_100.jpg Terry Gibbs - "Feelin' Good: Live In Studio"
$14.98
MAC 1022
Most recordings these days are manufactured in the studios. Musicians are recorded separately and, even if they physically appear in the same room at the same time, there is distance between them and they wear earphones in order to hear each other. The reason is to have separation between the sounds so mistakes can be fixed later on with editing and overdubbing. The goal is to have a "perfect" record, but this quest for perfection can make the music sound sterile and artificial. Vibraphonist Terry Gibbs, in producing his latest Mack Avenue project, had a different idea. "I wanted it to be like we were performing in a club. The idea was for us to set up as if it were a club where we could see each other's faces and establish rapport with each musician. We performed complete sets before an invited audience and had fun." The results are a dozen performances that are creative, spontaneous and swinging. There is no shortage of life on “Feelin' Good.”

$14.98
MAC 1018
This CD is a new take on twelve tunes that represent one of the most influential eras in the history of jazz, the bepop era. “52 nd and Broadway” is more than a historical tribute. To bring such timeless classics as “Lemon Drop,” Cherokee,” “Round Midnight” and “Night in Tunisia” into the present, Terry brought in a strong rhythm section – Tom Ranier on piano, Dave Carpenter on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums – and a string section of 16 violins, 4 violas and 4 cellos in arrangements that are often more big band-like than orchestral. In other words, the strings swing!

$10.98
SLY 3001
Think of The Good Thief as two rivers running, one into a jungle of lust, steamy and warm, the other into darkness, where shadows obscure the things we think we know. Both currents flow through the songs of John Brannen. On The Good Thief, his fourth album and the first from the new Sly Dog imprint, they carry his artistry for the first time up to a place that's above category. It's not country, though he has done his time in Nashville and shared a tour bus with Shania Twain and Toby Keith. And although it was Joe Walsh who essentially insisted that Brannen be signed to his first record deal, it's not exactly rock & roll, though Brannen has rocked his share of clubs. It's not regional, though his lyrics draw from the same well that nourishes some of the South's most evocative writers.

SLY 3002
"To hear the music of John Brannen is to hear the music of the South," observes the Charleston, South Carolina Post and Courier. To hear his music is to also visit the kudzu-draped locales below the Mason-Dixon Line as well as meet the distinctive characters to be found throughout the region, and travel along on Brannen's actual and emotional journeys as a dyed-in-the-cotton son of the South. That's because Brannen's songs, style and voice resonate with the essence of life along the East Coast of the American Southern states in much the same way, as reviewers have noted, that fellow artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, John Mellencamp and Steve Earle have captured their slices of real life from their regions across the nation.
